Even the most well-intentioned gifts can be a bad fit. Is it cool to pass them on to someone else?

PREPARING TO READ

Before you read the debate “Is It OK to Regift?” ask your students the following pre-reading question:

What are the pros and cons of regifting?

READING AND DISCUSSION

  • Have your students read the debate “Is It OK to Regift?” independently; read the debate out loud to them; or have one student read one side of the debate and another student read the other side.
  • After they’ve read the debate, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed? Remind them to vote in the poll at the end of the story.

In GIFT GUIDANCE, have students pretend they have received a gift they didn’t like and are posting to an online advice forum to ask for tips on what to do about the dilemma. Have them write one to two pages with the words of the post asking for advice, and at least two replies they imagine they might receive with advice for their dilemma. Have them start by describing the unwanted gift as well as their relationship to the person who gave it to them. Next, they should list the solutions they are considering to deal with the situation. Have them end by imagining at least two replies the person might receive that take into account perspectives they read about in the article.
