When Yolanda Renee King was in fifth grade, a group of first graders came up to her during recess one day. “Excuse me, are you related to Martin Luther King, Jr.?,” one of them asked. The children were delighted when Yolanda said yes. The famous civil rights activist was her grandfather.
Yolanda grew up hearing stories about the important work of her grandfather and her grandmother, Coretta Scott King. Her grandparents devoted their lives to fighting poverty, ending segregation, and expanding voting rights.
As she got older, Yolanda decided she wanted to continue her grandparents’ work. She started marching at protests and speaking at rallies.
Inspired by her family’s legacy, Yolanda wrote a children’s book, We Dream a World, to keep her grandparents’ dream alive. Read on to learn more about Yolanda’s journey from activist to author.
