In A PLAN FOR THE JOB, students should imagine they are helping a friend who wants to get started in a career like Tyler John’s: hairdresser or barber. Students should be able to answer the question, “How can someone become a hairdresser/barber in my home state?” Have students search online for their state’s requirements for a career in cosmetology. Then, based on their findings, they should write a short e-mail to their imagined friend containing words of advice: how many hours of school or apprenticeship are required, whether their friend should work in a salon as an apprentice or attend school, and how many years of training they would need before they become qualified.
