Lesson Plan: My Life With Two Dads

Read about one teen being raised by a same-sex couple, and find out why he wouldn’t have it any other way.

1. Preparing to Read

Before you read the article “My Life With . . . Two Dads,” ask your students the following pre-reading question:

What are some common misconceptions about what life is like for children of same-sex couples, and how can I advocate for LGBTQ families? 

2. Reading and Discussing

  • Have your students read the article “My Life With . . . Two Dads” independently; read the article out loud to them; or have students partner-read the article out loud.
  • After they’ve read the article, revisit the pre-reading question. Have their answers changed? 
  • Next, have your students answer the Close-Reading and Critical-Thinking questions, either working in small groups or independently.

Continue the learning journey with the following extension activity:

After students have read the article, have them ADVOCATE FOR LGBTQ FAMILIES by researching programs on colage.org, an organization dedicated to supporting children of LGBTQ parents. In this activity, they’ll choose their favorite Colage program and then design an Instagram post or a TikTok video to spread awareness! Hint: Canva is useful for creating multi-slide informational posts like the ones you might see on Instagram.
